?Trump’s phone: A cybersecurity threat

Reports that President Donald Trump has resumed using his Android-powered smartphone are prompting security experts to warn that his Twitter addiction could open up vulnerabilities inside the Oval Office

The New York Times reported Wednesday that Trump is still using “his old, unsecured Android phone, to the protests of some of his aides,” even after a story last week said he had been supplied with “a secure, encrypted device approved by the Secret Service.” That alarms experts who note that Android, an operating system developed by Google, is notoriously insecure, especially on older phones that no longer receive software updates from their manufacturers or wireless carriers

The website Android Central cited photographic evidence to claim that Trump’s go-to phone is a Samsung Galaxy S3, a model released in 2012 that has not received software updates since mid-2015. Researchers later uncovered one of the most dangerous Android vulnerabilities, the so-called Stagefright bug, which lets hackers take control of a phone using only a text message

“It’s just crazy that the president is interacting with such an out-of-date and likely insecure device,” Matthew Green, a computer science professor at Johns Hopkins University, told POLITICO

“His off-the-shelf Android could potentially become a room bug without his knowledge, said Bruce Schneier, one of the world’s foremost cybersecurity experts. “An attacker could certainly hijack his apps

The White House and the Secret Service did not respond to requests for comment. A spokeswoman for the Defense Information Systems Agency, which helps secure the president’s communications, declined to comment on protective measures

The continued questions about Trump’s phone use come after a presidential campaign in which he and his allies repeatedly accused Hillary Clinton of endangering national security by using a private email server when she was secretary of State. They also alleged, without evidence, that foreign governments had breached the server

For Trump and his phone, “the real issue is what he does with it,” Schneier said in an email. If he’s using it to send and receive classified information, we have a real problem

That might be unlikely for Trump, who once proclaimed that “no computer is safe” and has suggested that sensitive documents should be sent by courier. News reports say he doesn’t use email and that he communicates with aides by scribbling comments on printed documents — rather than tapping out feedback on a smartphone keyboard the way former President Barack Obama often did

But even if Trump isn’t using the phone to send and receive sensitive messages, it still could open up security risks if hackers infect it. For example, they could use the phone to covertly track his location, tweet out fake news about terrorist attacks, or even eavesdrop through the camera and microphone. Depending on how securely the computer networks in the White House have been hardened, any malware already implanted on the phone could possibly roam to other officials’ devices

Even a phone running the latest, most secure version of Android available would still be at risk of being penetrated by foreign intelligence agencies, especially those of Russia and China. While these spies would similarly target an iPhone, security experts say the Apple device is more capable of repelling hackers

“All of these attacks are possible, and even probable by the big national intelligence agencies,” Schneier said

Eight Secrets of Blarney Castle

Blarney Castle is not the biggest castle in Ireland, nor is it the oldest. (That honor goes to Kilbrittain Castle, about an hour south.) But it easily ranks as its most popular, with hundreds of thousands of travelers coming from all across the world to stroll the 1,500-acre grounds, explore the 14th-century castle, and, of course, kiss the famous Blarney Stone. According to legend, puckering up to the hulking, rather grimy, extremely old stone imparts the gift of gab, or eloquence. But that’s not the only thing interesting about this enchanting site

The castle came before the word

The word ‘Blarney’ made its way into the Oxford English Dictionary in the 1700s. Based on the legend attached to the stone, editors gave the meaning as: “talk which aims to charm, flatter, or persuade (often considered typical of Irish people).” As in: “It took all my Irish blarney to keep us out of court.”

Don’t leave without seeing the murder room

Anyone who watches Game of Thrones understands that life in the 1300s was no picnic. And Blarney Castle was no exception. A “murder room,” located just above the castle’s main entrance, proved crucial in warding off potential intruders. Anytime an unwanted visitor showed up, sentry would drop rocks, hot oil, or whatever weapons they could get their hands on, through a square hole in the floor

Scientists only just figured out where the stone came from

For years, rumors swirled around the stone’s origins: did it come from the same rock as Stonehenge? Was it related to the Stone of Scone, the coronation stone used by early Scottish and English kings? But in 2014, geologists confirmed that the stone was sourced from 330 million year old limestone, and that it couldn’t have come from England—molecular samples proved that the rock was native to southern Ireland

Cormac McCarthy was the first person to kiss the stone

No, not the famous author. In 1314, the stone was gifted to the castle’s then-owner, King Cormac McCarthy, as a thank you from King Robert the Bruce of Scotland, for providing military help that led to winning the Battle of Bannockburn. According to legend, a witch who lived in the nearby Druid rock garden told the king that the stone would bestow special gifts of eloquence to anyone who kissed it—so he did, and the tradition has continued ever since

There’s another legend

According to historians, the Blarney Stone didn’t get its mojo from a witch at all, but from Queen Elizabeth I. As the story goes, the English queen was eager to capture Blarney Castle for herself, but every time her troops showed up to storm the ramparts, smooth-talking Dermot McCarthy (a descendant of Cormac) managed to talk them out of it. After multiple failed attempts, Elizabeth I dismissed the fiasco as ‘blarney,’ and the name stuck

Kissing the stone isn’t as easy as it sounds

Rather inconveniently, the Blarney Stone was built into the east wall of the battlement, 85 feet off the ground, and to reach it you’ll have to climb 128 narrow stone steps. Once you’ve gotten to the top (and you’ve waited your turn), steady yourself for one of the most awkward smooches of your life: laying down on your back, a docent will assist as you grip a set of iron bars, tilt your head backwards, and deliver an upside-down kiss. It’s the only way.

There’s more to see beyond the castle

What British estate would be complete without beautiful gardens? From arboretums with rare trees to mystical Druid rock formations with names like Witch’s Kitchen and Wishing Steps, the gardens of Blarney Castle spin a tale as unique as the stone itself. Stop by the Bog Garden, where a trio of 600-year-old Yew trees sit alongside a gently trickling waterfall. Or, in early spring, be lulled by the sound of rustling leaves along the estate’s twin lime tree avenues

There’s a poison garden

Visitors would do well to heed a sign posted at the entrance to the Poison Garden, which warns: “Do not touch, smell, or eat any plant!” Opened in 2010, this highly researched collection of over 70 flora contains such toxic shrubs as Henbane, Hemlock, Wormwood and, unexpectedly, Cannabis. Though the enclosure (which keeps its deadliest specimens locked in black iron cages) occupies just a tiny fraction of the wider grounds, it’s easily the site’s most popular attraction

Some Tips to Improve Your Writing Skills

Writing is definitely the most advanced skill in any language. In other words, it naturally comes after listening, speaking, and reading. The following tips can help you to become a better writer

In order to write, the first thing is to have something in your mind to write about. That is, a clear message to pass on to the reader

When you have the main idea to write about in your mind, you need to consider it from different perspectives. To do so, ‘brainstorming’ can help you a lot. Brainstorming is a technique in which you try to think about something in a deep and unorganised manner. For instance, in an argumentative essay, you can think about the advantages and disadvantages of too much dependence on the internet. Later on, you can put the points you have come across in order

In the stage of brainstorming, it’s important for you to take a critical look at the topic being discussed. As a matter of fact, writing requires a lot of mental capacity, and you as a writer should become an even more deep-thinker to be able to write more logically and meaningfully

When you know what you are about to write, it’s important to organise the message in your mind, and then on a piece of paper. In this response, creating an outline can prove to be of great help. An outline shows the main ideas or facts about something without going into the details. You can write them down on a piece of paper to get more organised. This is what Brian Tracy has referred to as ‘Think on Paper’

If you are writing about something that is based on a chronological or sequential order (e.g. narrating a story), then you ought to give priority to the items of your outline in terms of time, because you are writing about a chain of events in a linear manner

A good technique that gives you ample opportunities in writing is ‘diary writing’. You can write about the important events in your life in the form of English on a daily, weekly or even monthly basis. Then little by little you will notice that this becomes one of your habits, which not only improves your writing but also makes you become a more critical thinker

Even in your studies, you can gain full advantage of ‘portfolio writing’. A portfolio is a set of pieces of writing together with photos, documents, etc. that you develop and gather in the course of education. They can help you to become more thoughtful, critical and reflective in your studies, and even more importantly, in your life

As it is self-evident, being a good writer and having a reliable word knowledge are closely interrelated. The more words you know, the better you can explain yourself in words

Apart from having a good word knowledge, in writing, which is an academic and formal skill, you need to have a reliable grammar knowledge as well. In fact, writing ungrammatically, no matter how meaningful and logical your writing is, cannot be tolerated by the reader

In terms of grammar, for instance, you are supposed to know the different connectives with their special functions in English. Connectives are words and phrases that join parts of sentences in your writing. They can help you to write more smoothly

Having finished your writing, it’s better to proofread what you’ve written. In proofreading, you revise your work critically and intensively, consulting your dictionary if needed. In so doing, you try to locate and solve possible mistakes or errors in terms of diction (choice of words), register (either formal or informal style), grammar, order of events, unity, logic and the meaning of your product.
